This was written for an amazing Edmonton group called
The Hammerhead Consort. Originally formed to play Bartok's famous work for
this combination, they went on to win several awards and decided to stay
together and seek out (and commission) new works. I wrote Toccatissimo! as a
gift to them and they performed it at
an Edmonton Composers' Concert Society (now called Tonus Vivus Society)
concert the next season. It was also recorded by CBC for later broadcast. As the name implies, it is a busy piece which builds from
a quick and light beginning to a shattering climax at the end. It contains many
polyrhythmic places, a favourite device of mine, and an aleatoric section for the pianos.
It was an excellent way for me to learn about percussion writing, and it works well. The score (with parts) is available by request, free of charge, provided
only that you give me the particulars of any performances so that I can keep this website up-to-date.
